By popular demand, we asked Nguyên in Hanoi to push the boundaries once again. Rather than revisiting a previous design, we took another leap—this time creating a Copper Damascus Bunka unlike anything else in the collection.
This particular knife, however, is truly one of one. After receiving the blade from Nguyên, we completed it here at Kakushin by hand-assembling it with a custom olive wood handle featuring a translucent epoxy tip that suspends a fish skeleton within the resin. The warm, organic grain of the olive wood flows beautifully into the crystal-blue tip, where the delicate skeletal structure appears to float inside the epoxy. It's an artistic detail that perfectly complements the natural tones of the forged copper Damascus while ensuring this knife can never be duplicated.
The blade itself blends the unmistakable glow of forged Copper Damascus with a hand-ground S-Grind geometry. Beyond its striking appearance, the S-Grind is highly functional: the blade transitions from thick to thin, then back to thick, creating subtle hollow sections that dramatically improve food release while maintaining excellent stiffness and cutting stability. It's a grind rarely seen on handmade production knives, requiring significantly more time and precision than a conventional flat grind.
At the core is 52100 high-carbon steel, chosen for its exceptional cutting performance. It takes an incredibly keen edge, offers outstanding edge retention, and sharpens with remarkable ease. Combined with the thin cutting edge and sophisticated S-Grind geometry, this Bunka glides effortlessly through vegetables, proteins, and herbs while greatly reducing the tendency for food to cling to the blade.
Every blade is hand-forged and hand-finished by Nguyên in Hanoi as part of a small limited production. Here at Kakushin, we transformed this particular example into a true 1-of-1 custom piece by pairing it with its exclusive olive wood and translucent fish skeleton handle. From the flowing Damascus pattern and copper highlights to the natural grain of the wood and the suspended skeletal inlay, every detail is unique. Once this knife finds its owner, there will never be another exactly like it.
