The Kagami Series — crafted in Tosa, Japan — was designed to bring together refined finishing, approachable performance, and a more distinctive handmade character. Each blade combines a clean polished Migaki finish with a Tsuchime Damascus pattern, creating a contrast that looks especially impressive in person. The reflective polish catches the light, while the hammered texture adds depth and a more traditional Japanese feel without making the knife look overly busy or flashy.
At the core is VG10 stainless steel hardened to approximately 61 HRC, giving the Kagami series the kind of balance that makes it an excellent everyday performer. Edge retention is strong, corrosion resistance is excellent, and the relatively thin geometry helps the blade move cleanly through ingredients without requiring the extra maintenance associated with carbon steel. It is a high-performance knife that remains practical enough to use every day.
One of the things that stood out to us immediately with this series was the finishing. The spine is softened, the choil is smoother, the polishing is cleaner, and the overall feel in hand is noticeably more refined than many conventional VG10 production knives. Small details like these make a meaningful difference once the knife is actually being used for extended prep.
Each blade is also traditionally hand engraved with the Kakushin Kanji, adding another subtle handmade element and ensuring that no two pieces feel completely identical.
This particular Petty was custom assembled here at the Kakushin shop with a one-of-a-kind stabilized wood and translucent epoxy handle. The natural burl transitions into a pale aqua translucent resin filled with organic black and gold details, creating an almost fluid, mineral-like appearance that changes depending on the angle and light. A polished black ferrule and fine decorative spacers frame the handle and give the brighter materials a cleaner, more structured finish.
Every Kakushin custom assembly is completed by hand in our workshop, where the handle is individually selected, fitted, aligned, and finished to suit the blade. Because these handles are unique, once a particular combination is sold, that exact knife generally cannot be recreated.
The result is a one-of-a-kind Kakushin custom that pairs the practical performance of VG10 with traditional Japanese blade finishing and a handle that turns this compact Petty into something genuinely distinctive.
