A true piece of functional art — this 180mm Bunka knife was handcrafted in Sakai, Japan by renowned blacksmith Satoshi Nakagawa. After 16 years apprenticing under the legendary Kenichi Shiraki, Nakagawa-san has built a reputation for crafting blades with remarkable precision and soul. Since opening his own forge in 2021, he has continued to refine his work, blending tradition with modern steels like Ginsan (Silver #3).
This particular Bunka features a San Mai construction with a Ginsan core, clad in stainless steel and brought to life with a mirror polish so reflective, it’s nearly impossible to capture accurately in photos. The clean, flowing lines of the blade shimmer in the light — something that can only be appreciated fully in person. The geometry is meticulously crafted for smooth, effortless cutting, and both the spine and choil are polished for added comfort.
What makes this knife truly one-of-a-kind is the custom handle: a bold pairing of turquoise stone and ebony wood, carefully assembled at Kakushin’s knife shop. It’s a striking match to the blade — a fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a contemporary edge.
Ginsan steel offers the sharpness and ease of honing found in high-carbon steels like Shirogami #2, but with the added benefit of rust resistance. With a Rockwell hardness of 61 HRC, it takes a keen edge and holds it well. The knife is double-beveled with a 50/50 grind, making it equally suitable for left- or right-handed users.
